Mining engineers play a key role in the planning, exploitation and excavation of mineral resources. Mining also requires the skills and technology of several other branches of engineering, which is why most of the curriculum for years one and two is common to all branches of engineering.
The Department is supported by the South African Colliery Managers'' Association (SACMA), the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa (AMMSA) and the Mining Alumni Society University of Pretoria (MASUP) and is guided by the Mining Advisory Board.
Topics covered include the fundamentals of mechanised mine design, the planning and management of mechanised operations, organisational issues and advanced mining technologies. Courses are presented in partnership with the Wits School of Mining Engineering, and the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering.
The course focuses on various topics and you will be exposed to touch points of mining engineering, including hard rock mining, ventilation, rock mechanics and geology, mine planning, openpit and underground mining methods, logistics and marketing, as well as environmental management.
